Unsolved Mysteries comes back with another volume following the events of a series of mysteries that have been left unresolved over the years. The series has been a huge success for Netflix, which explains the arrival of this new season of the show. Netflix actually has been building its true crime corner quite a bit, and every piece of content that they release on the subject seems to be quite successful. We will probably see lots of Unresolved Mysteries volumes in the future.
Unsolved Mysteries follows the same structure as the original series developed by Raymond Burr and tells stories about crime, ghosts, aliens, and so much more. That each episode is a self-contained mystery makes the entire season feel like a very entertaining and educational affair. No mystery ever overstays its welcome, and it fluctuates between being interesting and totally gripping. Yes, some stories will catch your attention more than others, but that is the nature of this anthology series.
This first episode deals with the mystery at Mile Mark 45. This mystery involves the death of a young girl named Tiffany. This is particularly mysterious because all the clues point to one way, but the authorities of the city of New Jersey are adamant that things were in a different direction. It is very strange when things are clearly one way and yet some people defy all logic and dismiss their own mistakes and are unable to rectify what they did. This mystery might hit some people right in the feelings as it deals with the death of such a young person.
Unsolved Mysteries follows the standard procedure when it comes to doing documentaries like this one. They interview as many people related to the case as they can get, and they also do some recreation of the events using actors for a better visual aid when it comes to retelling the events. This way of doing these documentaries is pretty straightforward. It is nice to see that the team is also willing to go on location and visit some places where the events took place, instead of just using archive footage.
This episode only manages to tell the side of the story of the victims. Their parents and some other close family members are the only ones willing to talk about what happened to Tiffany that horrible night. The team tried to have interviews with the authorities and some of Tiffany’s friends, but apparently, none of them were willing to do it. It is a shame because, while the side of the victim’s family has very good arguments. The other side is left completely undefended, and so, it is clear that there is still another part of the story we don’t know.
This other part of the story is vital to avoid the bias that it feels against the authorities during the episode. The fact that they didn’t want to give interviews really doesn’t help their case at all, and the episode feels incomplete. Of course, we are not expecting the producers of the show to solve a case such as this one, but the fact remains that this investigation could have gone further. The production values are quite solid, though, as the graphics and recreations really help to enhance the stories of the people being interviewed.
The first episode of Unsolved Mysteries opens the season with an excellent example of what the show has in store. The series will deliver much more variety than just normal disappearances and murders in future episodes. So if this is not exactly what you were hoping for from the show, then maybe just wait for a couple more episodes, as there will surely be something more to your liking.
