The Quintessential Quintuplets is one of those anime and manga properties that is clearly being done with the sole purpose of being a source for fan service. Fan service, as we know it in manga and anime scenes, is when the author of the series does anything to appeal to the sexual drives of the audience. So, yeah, having a group of beautiful quintuplets seems to fit completely inside that term. However, The Quintessential Quintuplets also manages to be charming and cute at the same time, and this movie finally brings the romantic story to a close.

The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie is a film directed by Masato Jinbo, and it is based on the manga written and illustrated by Negi Haruba. The movie serves as a sequel to the two seasons of the anime of the same name. The anime told the story of Futaru Uesugi, a young tutor who one day meets a beautiful young student who also happens to have four other sisters who look exactly like her. The story then develops into a love story between Futaru and the quintuplets, as they also learn to live their own lives after having suffered the complications of being five people who look the same.

The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie is a film made precisely for all those people who were fans of the original manga or the anime series and wanted to see the ending of this story. It is quite nice that the real hardcore fans managed to bring this film to US theaters and will be able to watch the movie in all of its glory. Crunchyroll is really on a roll lately, being able to bring new and smaller anime films to theaters. We will always have the next One Piece Film to look forward to, but films from smaller series also deserve attention.

The series has always stood out for its mixture of comedy, romance, and character development. This last element seems to be the major focus of this film, and it is really appreciated. It is hard to say that this movie will make you laugh out loud, comedy is quite subjective, but the movie doesn’t really have major jokes in that sense. The comedy this time feels more pleasant and is aimed at creating more chuckles than full laughs. This could be intended, as the movie is basically the climax of the story, and we are getting serious here.

The basic premise of the entire story is that Futaru must learn to differentiate between the sisters and choose which one is the one he truly loves. An answer is given in the movie, and surely it will be one that makes fans happy. At least one part of them. We know how fandom works, and even those characters with the least amount of possibility of success manage to have fans backing them up. We won’t talk about the answer to the question, but at least to me, it felt completely right.

That is one side of the story that truly comes to a conclusion here, but the most important and satisfying part of the conclusion comes in the form of character development for the sisters. They truly manage to start being independent of one another throughout the series, and here they finally make that one final jump into becoming their own persons. The love and connection that they all share are quite special, but here they really come together as characters. It might be a bit too late, but it serves very well as the climax of a story with that objective in the first place.

The voice cast is doing a great job, and they really manage to pull some strings toward the end with the help of some very well-positioned music and cute visuals. In regard to that point, even though we are talking about a movie, The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie doesn’t really feel like a high-budget animation project. This is not something created by Mappa or Trigger, and the quality of the animations isn’t really the point here. Bibury Studio does manage to elevate the quality of the anime on certain occasions, but it feels very much in line with the series.

In the end, The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie is a film aimed at a very niche audience. You don’t really need to see the series or the manga to understand what is happening here. However, you will lose a lot of the context that makes this resolution so meaningful for the characters and the story in general. The movie holds well thanks to solid animation that achieves its purpose, but it is the story and the characters that really shine here. It might not be a truly visual spectacle, but it will leave you smiling if you manage to go through the journey with these characters.

So, if you need something to watch that is cute and sweet, this is the movie for you, but we really recommend catching up with the anime before jumping into this. Your experience will be so much better if you do so.
