Bad Apples is an upcoming comedy-thriller directed by Jonathan Etzler in his English-language debut. Written by Jess O’Kane, the film is adapted from Rasmus Andersson’s debut novel De Oönskade. The cast features Saoirse Ronan and Jacob Anderson.
The film tells the story of Maria, a dedicated primary school teacher striving to inspire her class of 10-year-olds. However, her efforts are derailed by one particularly unruly and disruptive student. As the child’s behavior escalates and her career hangs in the balance, Maria makes a string of poor choices that culminate in her accidentally taking the troublesome student and locking them in her home.
Maria scrambles to undo her actions, but when the class begins to thrive and both the staff and parents express their delight at the remarkable improvement, she finds herself caught in an increasingly tricky predicament.
Ronan gained widespread recognition with her breakout role as a sharp-witted teenager in Atonement (2007), earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She went on to star as a murdered girl seeking justice in The Lovely Bones (2009), a teenage assassin in Hanna (2011), and a quirky baker in The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014).
Her performances in Brooklyn (2015), as a homesick Irish immigrant in 1950s New York, Lady Bird (2017), as the titular high school senior in Greta Gerwig’s film, and Little Women (2019), as Jo March, earned her critical acclaim and Academy Award nominations for Best Actress. She also won a Golden Globe for her role in Lady Bird.
Saoirse Ronan is gearing up for her next big-screen appearance, sharing insights about her role in the upcoming dark comedy Bad Apples.
Do you know what you’re filming later this year or next year? Are you going back to the stage? What’s coming up for you
RONAN: I can’t film anything this year. I’ve got too much to do with promoting these two films. So I won’t be filming anything. I have a film called Bad Apples that will come out next year, which is a sort of dark Scandi-Brit comedy. I don’t know what I’m doing next. I have a few things in development, but nothing solid to start next year.
I actually wanted to talk about Bad Apples just for a second. I read the synopsis, and it’s pretty crazy. Could you talk about what it’s about?
RONAN: It’s essentially about this teacher who’s overworked and incredibly stressed, and it’s all because of this one pupil in her class who is kind of classed as a “bad apple.” He makes her life and all the pupils’ lives a living hell. Through a series of unfortunate events, he ends up in her basement. She keeps him in there, and it’s about the aftermath of that.
The ripple effect of him being removed from the system, as it were. So, it’s a real commentary on corruption, I think, the education system and abuse of power, really. But it’s also hilarious. I saw it the other day, and it’s excellent, so I’m excited about that one.
