A few days ago, the first trailer for ‘Superman’ was released, and the reactions have been very positive. The movie will bring back the classic Superman in James Gunn’s unique style.

But fans are also curious about what’s next for the DC Universe now that one project is out and the start of the new DCU is coming soon.

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will be the second major film in the DCU. James Gunn is focused on building a strong and respected universe, and from what he’s said, we can expect something truly amazing.

Gunn has praised the project, and rumors suggest the script is emotionally impactful with a deep, moving story. This aligns with the original comic, which is considered one of the best Supergirl stories ever.

James Gunn explained to Omelete that he chose ‘Supergirl’ as the second film after ‘Superman’ because the script was outstanding.

I didn’t necessarily know that Supergirl would be the second film we would make, but Ana [Nogueira] wrote an incredible script, and then we hired an incredible director, and we’re going to make this film after Superman because he was the best option. Other films were written, but they weren’t as good as this one. So let’s continue with this rhythm. Everything has to be good. Quality comes first in every project we do. And this is more important than telling a grandiose mega-narrative.

Gunn explained how he decides which movies get approved at DC Studios. He said the main focus will always be on the story in front of them, not just future plans. He also made it clear that no film will be approved without a complete script. If something doesn’t work out, they will make changes. He mentioned that some films and series have surprised them in a good way.

I will never sacrifice the present for the future. Everything will always be about the story that is in front of us. This is the most important thing. We will not give green light to films without ready scripts. We have basic plans for what happens in the universe, but if something doesn’t work out the way we want, then it will change. We have films and series that surprised us.

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ is scheduled for release in 2026. According to James Gunn, the film will be ready by then and will benefit from the success of Superman, which comes out next year.

Filming will start in England in January 2025, giving enough time to make the film great and improve it further.

Gunn also mentioned that he’s seen a screen test with Milly Alcock as Supergirl, along with Ruthye Marye Knoll, confirming her role in the movie.
