Although set in a different universe from the Arrowverse, Superman & Lois is considered the best CW superhero show due to its strong writing. The series had some ups and downs, especially in the last season.
After Nexstar took over CW and made major changes, Superman & Lois was one of the few shows that survived. During this time, many shows were canceled, and some of the main cast were let go. There were also fewer writers, and the number of episodes was reduced.
Despite these challenges, the show was able to wrap up its story in its 4th and final season, even though it was originally planned to run for at least 7 seasons.
At a panel during the San Francisco Fan Expo, the stars of Superman & Lois talked about plans for the show that will sadly never happen. First, they discussed the show’s connection to the larger Arrowverse.
Superman & Lois is linked to the Arrowverse through Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman, who first appeared on Supergirl. However, the show was later confirmed to take place in a different reality, as the showrunner decided to keep the two universes separate.
Although many cast members reprise their roles from the Arrowverse, Superman & Lois changes things in a few ways, like recasting Lex Luthor. Showrunner Todd Helbing explained that the characters in the series are like doppelgängers of their Arrowverse counterparts.
When we were trying to come up with analogues of who this guy could be, personality-wise, when we started describing him hit just felt like we were describing someone tom could play with his eyes closed, his comic timing and just everything about his energy level,
Tyler Hoechlin said he felt lucky to have his top choices, Lex Luthor and Doomsday, appear in Superman & Lois. He was excited to see them together and felt it would be “greedy” to ask for more, especially with the show ending.
Elizabeth Tulloch then talked about the planned crossover with Batwoman. Although it was considered, strict COVID restrictions in 2020 made it impossible to happen.
On top of that, the two shows were filmed in different formats, which caused more problems. She also revealed that a reference to Supergirl with a photo of Melissa Benoist was originally planned for the Superman & Lois pilot but was removed as discussions about separating the show from the Arrowverse were happening.
We started shooting in October of 2020, so there were really, really strict Covid restrictions and there was some talk of maybe doing a crossover with Batwoman, and then they were like, let’s just, no

Despite everything, Superman & Lois is a great addition to live-action Superman adaptations, mainly due to its wholesome themes and strong family dynamic. The show is steadily heading toward its finale, with the final episode airing on December 2nd.
