A long-awaited sequel to the original ‘Moana’ was released over a week ago. Critics had mixed feelings about the movie, however. While the animation was widely praised as stunning, many found the story less inspired than the original, though it still entertained as a vibrant adventure.

Despite these mixed reviews, the movie was still a box-office success. ‘Moana 2’ has (so far) earned $389.3 million worldwide as of December 2, with $225.4 million from the U.S. and Canada. It broke several records, including the biggest Thanksgiving opening and the highest-ever opening for a Walt Disney Animation film.

Every time a movie be it live-action or animated breaks several records, the future of the franchise looks bright and according to the latest reports, ‘Moana’ franchise is not an exception to that rule.

According to Daniel Richtman’s paid newsletter, a third ‘Moana’ movie is planned. No additional details have been given, and the information was not confirmed by the official sources. Still, Richtman is a fairly reliable source when all things are taken into account.

Originally planned as a Disney+ series, ‘Moana: The Series’ was reworked into a theatrical sequel, ‘Moana 2,’ after Disney executives were impressed with the early footage. Directed by David Derrick Jr. with new co-directors and producers joining the project, the film was developed alongside the live-action ‘Moana’ remake and premiered as a full-length sequel instead of a streaming series.

The sequel definitely proved that it can stand on its own, and hopefully, we get a shorter development this time around, if the rumors prove true.

‘Moana 2’ is currently in cinemas worldwide. Have something to add? Let us know in the comments below!
