The wait is finally over—Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has been released! Created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, the story follows a group of kids who might have special powers, and their adventure to find their way home after getting lost following a mysterious event.

The show has a similar vibe to classic children’s movies like The Goonies, but it’s enjoyable for both kids and adults. Like The Mandalorian, the series also features an adult (played by Jude Law) looking after younger characters, making it relatable to fans of that show.

The cast includes Jude Law, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Robert Timothy Smith, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Tunde Adebimpe, Kerry Condon, and Jaleel White.

After two new episodes, the first reactions to Star Wars: Skeleton Crew are very positive. The show currently has a strong 93% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 36 reviews, and 87% from audiences.

Critics love its nostalgic feel, comparing it to the classic Amblin movies, and say it mixes Star Wars magic with a fun, coming-of-age adventure like The Goonies. Early reviews suggest that it’s an exciting and enjoyable new addition to the Star Wars universe.

With so much intrigue already in place, it’s a story that feels poised to both honor and expand the Star Wars universe.

Adrian Ruiz – But Why Tho?

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew hits the right marks using known commodities. It borrows liberally from ’80s era children’s classics for a scrappy kids adventure with heavy pirate themes. Audiences will sense a familiar Spielberg and Zemeckis vibe.

Julian Roman – MovieWeb

The first three episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew promise a fun, low-stakes adventure into the galaxy we know and love.

Jonathan Sim – ComingSoon.net

This is a perfectly fun entry in the ever-expanding Star Wars canon: light and frothy by design, driven by a genuinely sweet cast of younglings at the fore.

John Nugent – Empire Magazine

Not all reviews have been positive. Some critics, though in the minority, feel the show relies too much on nostalgia and doesn’t bring anything new or memorable. They also think the show struggles to find its identity as a TV series.

The introduction of the main characters feels awkward, and the story moves slowly. The show only starts to get interesting when Jude Law’s character appears. Overall, some see it as a forgettable and disappointing start.

That’s all that “Skeleton Crew” offers: appropriation for a halcyon era of cinema and little else. Worse, the exceptional Spielberg-ian tenor of marvel and amazement is absent, leaving behind a mostly hollow, fairly unremarkable, forgettable product.

Rodrigo Perez – The Playlist

All of these assets are buried under one problem: this is a premise that doesn’t know how to be a TV show yet.

Zack Handlen – Bostone Globe

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew gets off to a depressingly familiar start, while bungling the introduction of its primary protagonists and generally plodding along until Jude Law pops up.
