If you’re a gamer, Discord is probably one of the main applications you are using. But this chat application is not just for gamers, as it is being used by various people for communication and sharing content, which is why it is so popular and why so many people around the world are using it.
It was released on May 13, 2015, and since then, the platform has become available in 30 languages. As of 2024, the platform has about 150 million monthly active users and 19 million weekly active servers, while, as of March 2024, Discord was the 30th most visited website in the world with 22.98% of its traffic coming from the United States.
However, while people generally use Discord on a daily basis, the popularity of the platform might be in danger, as a lawsuit has been filed against the service for its complex and confusing subscription practices, which are seemingly against the law.
This piece of information was broken on X by our friends from Culture Crave, who confirmed that a lawsuit has, indeed, been filed:

The post leads to the original source, which is lawyer Rob Freund, who explained the situation a bit and even provided us with a portion of the lawsuit:

As you can see, the issue with this is Discord’s subscription practice, which is seemingly too complex. It is easy to subscribe to Discord Nitro, but based on what the suit says and looking at the experiences of the people who are using it, it is incredibly difficult to cancel the subscription.
It is not impossible, but the process, as it seems, is so complex that people lose motivation to do it, which shouldn’t be the case. Namely, the process of canceling a subscription is so complex that there are YouTube tutorials that explain how it is done, which definitely shouldn’t be the case.
Canceling a subscription should be as easy as signing up for a subscription, and it is indicative that Discord has intentionally made this process too complex in order to demotivate people from doing it, and that is a practice that will need to change if the court decides against Discord in this situation. We are definitely going to follow up on this story, so keep following us for more information!
