It seems that major media houses are heavily investing in romantasy nowadays as Netflix won a big bidding war to adapt Callie Hart’s popular fantasy romance novel ‘Quicksilver,’ securing the rights in a 7-figure deal.
Elizabeth Cantillon will produce the film, with Hart serving as an executive producer. The deal was arranged by WME. ‘Quicksilver,’ the first book in the ‘Fae & Alchemy’ series, quickly became a #1 bestseller on Amazon after its release last summer.
The series so far follows Saeris Fane, a 24-year-old thief with secret alchemical powers. After opening a gateway to a Fae realm, she faces a deadly icy world, dangerous enemies, evolving powers, and an intense enemies-to-lovers romance.
This is just one more in line of the upcoming romantasy adaptations to the big screen. In 2021, Hulu announced plans for ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ TV series, developed by Ronald D. Moore and Sarah J. Maas.
In October 2023, it was announced that Amazon MGM Studios is working on a TV show based on the ‘Fourth Wing’ series. Amazon and Outlier Society have secured rights to all the books, with Rebecca Yarros and Liz Pelletier as executive producers.
In early 2023, Passionflix announced it was turning J.R. Ward’s ‘Black Dagger Brotherhood’ vampire romance series into a TV show. Filming started in October 2024, and the show is expected to release in late spring or early summer 2025.
As you can see, good times are ahead for fans of romance fantasy books, as all major studios are seeking to secure rights to bestsellers.
