Audiences have largely embraced ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ with open arms, praising its stunning return to Middle-Earth with a fresh anime twist.

This prequel, which explores the lore of Helm Hammerhand, has captivated fans with its detailed animation and compelling narrative.

Maggie Lovitt was thrilled, declaring the film as a beautiful rekindling of her Tolkien passion: ‘Stunning animation, gorgeous storytelling, and phenomenal voice work!’

Fico Cangiano echoed this sentiment, describing it as a ‘fantastic, refreshing new addition’ to the LOTR franchise, with visuals and voice acting that vividly recall the beloved Middle Earth.

Brandon Norwood enjoyed the movie despite noting some pacing issues, particularly praising a memorable hand-to-hand fight scene.

Justin Lawrence from Geekcentric finds the blend of 2D and 3D anime-inspired animation in ‘The War of the Rohirrim’ empowering, enriching Middle-earth’s lore with themes of legacy, hope, and leadership. Although he feels the film might be more suitable for streaming, he believes Tolkien enthusiasts will definitely appreciate it.

Rafael Motamayor even suggested that the film’s animated approach should pave the way for future Middle-Earth stories.

Mike Reyes and Steve Seigh both commended the film’s audiovisual achievements, with Reyes highlighting the animation as ‘breathtaking’ and Seigh calling it a ‘stunning new chapter’ of Tolkien’s legacy.

B.M. describes ‘The War of the Rohirrim’ as a ‘fantastic journey back to Middle-earth,’ highlighting the outstanding voice cast, dazzling animation, and superb directing by Kenji Kamiyama. She recommends it as a must-watch for the sheer spectacle of its epic action and battle sequences.

Matt Neglia acknowledged the film’s spectacular battle sequences and art direction, despite some story predictability.

Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geeky praises the film as a great addition to the iconic franchise, making it suitable for families with teens and Tolkien fans alike. She commends its deeper lore exploration, empowering story, insane action, and exciting cameos, making it a multifaceted cinematic experience.

Anthony Gagliardi from The Movie Podcast calls the film ‘breathtaking on the big screen’ under Kenji Kamiyama’s direction. He applauds the thrilling battles and striking designs but notes that the story falls short, lacking memorable characters or a compelling narrative.

Daniel Baptista, also from The Movie Podcast, lauds ‘The War of the Rohirrim’ as a ‘roaring return to Middle-earth,’ with animation that beautifully merges Peter Jackson’s cinematic vision with anime artistry. Despite finding the film overly long, he relishes the return to this beloved universe.

However, not all reactions were as favorable.

Jeff Nelson criticized the movie for its lack of depth, arguing that the story didn’t justify the runtime and that the main character deserved more complexity.

Ezra Cubero found the pacing slow and the characters uninspiring, admitting that he was let down by the film.

As reviews continue to pour in, ‘The War of the Rohirrim’ is proving to be a visual feast and a worthy journey back to Middle-Earth, though it’s clear that it might not resonate equally with all viewers.
