Join us on Reddit for the latest Marvel & DC news!
As you know, the information that Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was, at one point, the hottest piece of information in the entertainment industry. The MCU fans finally have something to look forward to again after a lengthy run of subpar films, as Downey’s comeback is guaranteed to stir things up.
The San Diego Comic-Con revelation was a major thing and the fans are now looking forward to seeing how Marvel and Downey are going to handle the role of Doctor Doom. But, it’s not just them – almost everyone either had or still has an opinion on this, and we have one such opinion for you here.
Namely, speaking to Josh Horowitz recently, James Gunn was asked about the Downey casting and the filmmaker was pretty clear on what he thought about this decision, so if you want to know what exactly the current DCU co-head said, keep reading!
As you know, Robert Downey Jr. played Iron Man in the MCU, and his heroic sacrifice in Endgame is one of the franchise’s biggest moments.
Everyone thought that Downey would come back to the MCU in some capacity, but while Marvel was quick to confirm his return, no one really expected that he would be coming back as the villainous Doctor Doom!
This was a controversial decision for some, while others loved it because of the potential that it provides. Since then, many people have voiced their opinions on the issue, and recently, we stumbled upon this:
James Gunn says it was "a smart move" to cast Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom in the #MCU.

"I was excited about it. I also love Robert… I think it's a great idea. I think there's nobody better than him."

Personally i love Rdj i love doom and i love ironman but casting rdj as doom is the worst decision… its just marvel is so desperate i see that. But hey im going to watch doom anyways

Of course he'd say that. Not like there are tons of other great actors out there who would nail it even more.

Even a kid would know it's smart move

Come on Gunn
gotta think about it from the grand scheme of things. it’s the multiverse. literally anything can be anything. yes it’s obvious that they want to sell tickets but let’s not act like they cant cook here

Marvel just doesn't want to try to do something new, but at the same time they want to make billions like before. That's why this idea was implemented. The multiverse in MCU is just a way to bring back the old actors, but not a tool for telling interesting stories.

Yes, smart to make money. But at the plot level it's so stupid, and dosen't even respect fans, since they are basically saying "Now we have RDJ back you will go back to watch our film". And is feeding a toxic part of MCU's community.

It’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen happen in franchise cinema casting.

When you sacrifice all plot for fame: “i made such a smart move”
