Since starting and leading the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, James Gunn has moved over to the DCU and is working on creating proper competition for Marvel with his movies. The future of the DCU is looking exciting, but while we are still waiting to see how successful Gunn will be, the question about his Marvel period is still coming in.

Namely, if you remember, there were some rumors that Gunn left the MCU over a fight with Kevin Feige, as Gunn was looking into either getting more creative control of the MCU or completely taking over Kevin Feige’s role in Marvel Studios. Well, this is, as you might have guessed, going to be the topic of this report.

As you probably know from our earlier reports, speaking to Josh Horowitz recently, James Gunn revealed many interesting details about his career and his plans, but he also answered one interesting question about his time at Marvel, so keep reading to find out more!

As you know, James Gunn and Peter Safran recently took over the DCEU following Zack Snyder’s departure and they decided to revamp it, creating the new DCU.

It remains to be seen how successful the two of them will be, but we can say that they are ambitious and that the little projects we’ve seen so far indicate that we might be in for something really exciting.

However, James Gunn’s break with Marvel was interesting, as it happened even before he did the final Guardians of the Galaxy movie, with many fans believing that Marvel only brought Gunn back to avoid a scandal.

The root of the split was supposedly creative differences, but there were rumors that Gunn wanted more control in the MCU or that he even wanted to replace Feige. Of course, none of this was ever confirmed, but when we stumble upon this:

And if you don’t believe us, here is what Gunn said:

As you can see, Josh wanted to address the issue in a subtle way, and Gunn was pretty clear that there was nothing more to these rumors, as he said that he would not have wanted Feige’s job at Marvel. And this makes sense, seeing how he is running things at DC together with Peter Safran, while Feige is more or less the sole head of Marvel Studios and has all the control.

Gunn further elaborates on how he is handling the creative side of the DCU while Safran is taking care of the business side of the whole thing. He admits that he himself doesn’t have the CEO mindset to handle the business side, which is why he would not have been a good replacement for Feige, as per his own words.

Gunn is the creative mastermind, and he handles the story part of the DCU, which is why his partnership with Safran makes so much sense at this point.
