Uncharted is one of the best and most popular video game series of all time. Fans from around the world loved the adventures of Nathan Drake and have played all the games, still wanting more, despite the fact that the future of the video game franchise is actually unclear at this point.
In 2022, the game made a transition to the big screen in a big-budget movie starring Tom Holland as a young Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his mentor, Sully.
The movie received mixed reviews, and the fans were highly critical of the casting choices, but it seems that this is not stopping Sonny from continuing to work on a sequel.
We have known for some time that Sony was working on a sequel with Tom Holland returning, but it has been a while since we received any information about that movie, which had some of the fans worried about the future of the series, but it seems that fans need not worry about the project, although it might take a while.
The video game franchise began in 2007 with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, which was a major hit for Naughty Dog. This console game, which is still one of the best games for the PlayStation consoles, soon became a series and has, as of the time of writing, sold around 40+ million copies in total, which is absolutely amazing.
Building on the fact that we have seen numerous video game adaptations in recent decades, Sony – naturally – wanted to bring this series to the bring screen as well, and that actually made a lot of sense. Uncharted had a lot of cinematic potential and this modernized version of Indiana Jones is something that the fans could potentially enjoy and thus came 2022’s Uncharted movie.
The film starred Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as younger versions of Drake and Sully, and serves as a sort of origin story for the two of them. It earned a solid $407.1 million on a $120 million budget, and while it was not a box office bomb, it earned significantly less than Sony had wished for, and the reviews were mixed.
It wasn’t horrible, but the movie had little to no charm of the original games and the main characters were horribly miscast, which is what the fans and critics said as well.
But, regardless of that, Sony confirmed that it was working on making Uncharted a series or even a franchise, with more films on the way.
Last year, Wahlberg confirmed that a script was still being written, which was reaffirmed by Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Steven O’Dell earlier this year, and we have now received a new confirmation that the sequel is being worked on, but it could be a while before we see it. The reason? Tom Holland’s busy schedule!
Namely, Deadline talked to producer Charles Roven about his life and career, and Uncharted, a movie he produced, was mentioned there and here is what Roven said:
DEADLINE: Are we going to see more Uncharted? It took forever, but it is branded IP and a crowd-pleasing hit…
ROVEN: We’re working on a script, but we’re going to have to wait now for Chris Nolan’s movie that Tom and Zendaya are doing. And then right after that, he and Zendaya are doing Spider-Man. I think both those movies are releasing on the same day or the week after each other or something. It’s another potential Barbenheimer.
DEADLINE: Delightful guy, that Tom Holland. Deadline’s involved in the Sands Festival in St. Andrews, Scotland, a passion project for The Avengers co-director Joe Russo and AGBO. We had the first celebrity golf tournament, and Tom was the big draw. He also starred in this terrific short film directed by his brother, Harry, which played opening night. I walked with Tom on the course for a couple of holes and we shot a video interview, and then I left.
Very next hole, one of his friends clocked him in the head with a golf ball, and Tom went down. He said he was okay, but Joe Russo drove him to the hospital anyway. He was back in time to attend a dinner that night, a knot on his head. He said, Mike, if you would’ve hung around for one more hole, I would’ve insisted you put that video on Deadline. But since you weren’t…Oops. Now you’ve got me spilling the tea.
ROVEN: They’re a great family, and I love working with him. I can’t wait for him to do the next Uncharted. I can’t wait for him to do American Speed. That’s a true story based on these four Whittington brothers [Austin Butler is the co-star]. There’s only one of them who’s still alive, Don, but they have two racing accomplishments that nobody’s been able to duplicate.
They’re the first brother team to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and they came out of nowhere to win it. And then the third brother ended up joining them, and they became the first three brothers to qualify for the Indy 500, in three separate cars. They had some other really interesting things about their life and how they got to be where they are. It’s a very interesting story.
