Jennifer Lawrence is, of course, one of the biggest stars of our time and while the Oscar-winning actress has a variety of different roles in her career, there have been some truly memorable ones, which the fans love even now after some time has passed since she appeared in them.
Fans of the actress will know that she has not shied away from doing explicit scenes, and her career is full of such moments. While this might imply that she is comfortable with such scenes and that the industry hasn’t influenced her in a negative way via this, the truth is not like that.
We have found an old interview with Lawrence in which she discusses her first on-screen sex scene. It was a correct, but bizarre experience for the actress. We absolutely believe it needs to be shared with the public.
This will help everyone understand how stressful such experiences can be. Despite everything, actors—and even more so, actresses—sometimes go through very rough moments in their careers.
The interview – or confession, to be more precise – was part of THR‘s annual Actress Roundtable back in 2015, and the actresses gathered commented on several things. One of the topics that came up was the strangest thing they had to do for a film, and this is what Lawrence said:
Have you said no to doing something onscreen?
LAWRENCE: I don’t think so. I mean, I’ve skinned a squirrel.
Not a real squirrel?
LAWRENCE: Of course it was a real squirrel. I didn’t kill it. But no, not yet. I had my first real sex scene a couple weeks ago [while shooting Passengers with Chris Pratt], and it was really bizarre. It was really weird.
BLANCHETT: When you say “real” sex scene, do you mean penetration or …? (Laughter.)
LAWRENCE: No, no. Thank you for clarifying. It was weird. And everything was done right; nobody did anything wrong. It’s just a bizarre experience.
How do you prepare for that?
LAWRENCE: You drink. I got really, really drunk. But then that led to more anxiety when I got home because I was like, “What have I done? I don’t know.” And he was married. And it was going to be my first time kissing a married man, and guilt is the worst feeling in your stomach.
And I knew it was my job, but I couldn’t tell my stomach that. So I called my mom, and I was like, “Will you just tell me it’s OK?” It was just very vulnerable. And you don’t know what’s too much. You want to do it real, you want everything to be real, but then … That was the most vulnerable I’ve ever been.

The movie Lawrence is talking about is Passengers, a highly controversial movie that Lawrence later spoke of in… well, not in a good light, to be frank. The controversial scene is the following one:
The thing we are glad about is that everyone was professional and that the experience was not a bad one for the actress, but this report should be a piece of evidence to everyone who thinks that it is easy or fun to do such things and that major film stars don’t go through stressful situations.
This is a delicate issue, and awareness has to be raised in order for things to change in the future.
Also, back then, Chris Pratt also commented on that scene, and while he confirmed that it took a lot of preparation for the scene, it seems that he – as well – did not fully understand the plight Lawrence was going through:
I had never met Jen prior to doing Passengers. Of course I knew of her, I knew her work. [But] we jumped right into basically working so the first time we met was at her house doing a table read with the director, and so we really bonded over the script and the story.
As we were working together, because we are essentially the only two people in the movie, as we were working together in Atlanta, we just became fast friends. And we bonded over a mutual love of Dumb & Dumber. Just like jokes and life. Aside from doing a great job and telling a good story, I think your primary goal is to make the other person comfortable. She wanted to have some wine, so we did, and that was nice.
