EA Turns Down ‘Dead Space 4’ as Franchise’s Future Remains Uncertain

In 2024, Glen Schofield, the original creator of Dead Space, approached Electronic Arts (EA) with a proposal for Dead Space 4. Unfortunately, EA declined the idea, citing their current business priorities and market strategies.
Schofield, who had previously left Visceral Games to co-found Sledgehammer Games, expressed his willingness to develop a new installment in the Dead Space series if EA were to reconsider. He acknowledged the challenges in the gaming industry, especially when it comes to launching new titles.
The Dead Space franchise began in 2008, drawing inspiration from games like Resident Evil and setting its horror narrative in the vastness of space. The first game was well-received for its terrifying atmosphere and engaging gameplay. Dead Space 2 followed with similar acclaim, while Dead Space 3, despite introducing a co-op campaign, faced development challenges and didn’t perform as well commercially.
After Dead Space 3, EA put the series on hold. In 2023, they released a remake of the original Dead Space, which received positive reviews. However, it appears that the remake didn’t meet EA’s sales expectations, leading them to shelve any further plans for the franchise, including potential sequels or additional remakes.
Schofield’s recent venture, The Callisto Protocol, was seen as a spiritual successor to Dead Space. Developed by Striking Distance Studios, which Schofield founded after leaving Sledgehammer Games, the game aimed to capture the horror elements that fans appreciated in Dead Space.
However, it didn’t achieve the same level of critical acclaim. Schofield has since departed from Striking Distance Studios, leaving the future of The Callisto Protocol series uncertain.
The rejection of Dead Space 4 by EA has disappointed many who were hopeful for a continuation of the series. Schofield remains open to revisiting the franchise if given the opportunity, but for now, the future of Dead Space remains uncertain.
