James Mangold Shares Update on ‘Dawn of the Jedi’, Confirms Co-Writing with Beau Willimon

The Star Wars franchise has many projects coming, including a new movie trilogy. Along with the movies and The Mandalorian & Grogu, James Mangold is working on a special Star Wars film.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm, Mangold was originally set to direct a Boba Fett movie inspired by Sergio Leone, which later turned into The Book of Boba Fett series. He was also hired to direct and co-write Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

At Celebration Europe on April 7, 2023, it was confirmed that Mangold would direct a Star Wars film about the origins of the Jedi. The movie, called Dawn of the Jedi, will explore the creation of the Jedi and the discovery of The Force.

Mangold aims for an epic feel, similar to The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur, and used these classic films to convince Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy of the movie’s potential.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Mangold gave an important update on the movie. He shared that he and Beau Willimon are still working on the script and haven’t finished the final draft yet, so it’s not clear what will happen next. He stressed that they are focused on completing the draft before moving on to the next steps.

My partner and I have been writing it. I don’t know what’s next because we haven’t gotten to the end of that process. We’re trying to finish a draft.

Beau Willimon is best known in Star Wars circles for writing “The Prison Arc” in Andor. The upcoming movie is set to take place 25,000 BBY, but other details are still unknown. Fans are excited to see Mangold explore a completely new era of Star Wars on the big screen.
