‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Is One of 18 Finalists for the Visual Effects Oscar as Shortlist Voting Begins

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ dominated the summer box office, wrapping up with $636.7 million in the U.S. and Canada and $701.3 million overseas. This brought its worldwide total to $1.338 billion, making it the second highest-grossing movie of 2024, behind ‘Inside Out 2,’ which earned $1.699 billion.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s MCU debut also earned solid reviews, with a 7.7 IMDb score, a 78% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, and an impressive 94% audience score.

Even after its streaming release, the movie stayed strong, pulling 19.4 million views in six days. While it didn’t top Pixar’s animated sequel, which hit 30.5 million views in five days, it continued to prove its popularity.

Now, Wade and Logan’s journey isn’t over. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ has made it to the 18 finalists for the Visual Effects Oscar as the shortlist voting gets underway.

Just before Thanksgiving, the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch informed the teams behind 20 films that they advanced to the next round of consideration.”

  • “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” (Sony Pictures)
  • “Gladiator II” (Paramount Pictures)
  • “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (Warner Bros.)
  • “Here” (Sony Pictures)
  • “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (20th Century Studios)
  • “Mufasa: The Lion King” (Walt Disney Pictures)
  • “A Quiet Place: Day One” (Paramount Pictures)
  • “Spaceman” (Netflix)
  • “Twisters” (Universal Pictures)
  • “Wicked” (Universal Pictures)

The shortlist of 10 finalists, along with nine other Oscar categories, will be revealed on Tuesday, Dec. 17. After that, the Visual Effects Branch will vote to select five nominees for the 97th Academy Awards.
