The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is going to be released in the United States on December 13, 2024, but this anime take on The Lord of the Rings franchise has already been released in some international markets and Variety and Box Office Mojo are reporting on the first box office results.

The movie is going to be the first proper Lord of the Rings movie after Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, but also something completely new for many reasons. One, it is going to be set in the past and will explore the world of Middle-earth from a different perspective. Two, it is an anime film.

Ahead of its wide international and U.S. release, we are going to bring you the early numbers and all the data you need to know ahead of the film’s American premiere, which is sure to boost the box office numbers for the film.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a new Lord of the Rings movie and a new take on the franchise and the first animated take on the stories in more than 40 years, which speaks for itself.

The film is brought to us by visionary Japanese director Kenji Kamiyama, best known for his work on Ghost in the Shell and Eden of the East, and based on the early reviews, the film is a truly great work.

Wwhile it is set for a wide international release on December 13, 2024, some territories have already seen the movie’s release. Variety reports that the movie has been released in 3,410 theaters in 31 territories around the world, most of which are in Latin America. The results are as follows:

CountryRelease DateOpeningGross
ArgentinaDecember 5, 2024$37,000$37,000
BrazilDecember 5, 2024$106,000$106,000
Costa RicaDecember 5, 2024$33,000$33,000
ItalyDecember 5, 2024$156,088$329,781
PeruDecember 5, 2024$31,000$31,000

These are only partial numbers, but both Variety and Box Office Mojo report that the movie has earned just $2 million in its first international week, but that doesn’t have to mean anything as there are several facts to consider here.

First of all, the number of theaters is very small, and most aren’t in large markets (USA, China, Japan, UK, France, etc.), which accounts for a weaker result. You also have to consider the fact that this is an early release and that many fans did not even know that the movie has already come out.

On top of that, animated films (especially anime) generally earn less at the box office.

Considering all of this, the numbers aren’t really horrible and a bigger boost is expected in the upcoming weeks, which is something we are going to keep you up-to-date with!
