Deadpool & Wolverine is the latest hit in the MCU, bringing Reynolds’ Deadpool and Jackman’s Wolverine into the cinematic universe, along with many beloved Marvel characters from past movie franchises.
The movie was expected to do well, especially with all the fan service it offered. It made over a billion dollars at the box office and will likely earn a lot from merchandise. With Disney facing superhero flops, it’s no surprise that Deadpool & Wolverine could lead to a sequel or more appearances for these characters.
After the movie’s release, rumors began to spread that a fourth film is in early development, or that Deadpool and Wolverine could show up in Secret Wars.
Recently, Ryan Reynolds, the creator of Deadpool, talked about the character’s future with Andrew Garfield in Variety’s “Actors to Actors”. He shared that Deadpool works best when he isn’t used too much and when his appearances are unexpected. This means we likely won’t see a sequel or big appearances from Deadpool anytime soon.
REYNOLDS: I don’t know. Honestly, my feeling is that the character works very well in two ways. One is scarcity and surprise. So it had been six years since the last one, and part of the reason is that it swallows my whole life. I have four kids, and I don’t ever want to be an absentee [dad].
I kind of die inside when I see their faces and they do a sports thing or something and I missed it. I don’t know what the future of “Deadpool” will be, but I do know that we made the movie to be a complete experience instead of a commercial for another one.
Ryan Reynolds has talked about how working on Deadpool movies affects his personal life. When asked about a sequel at the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere, he explained that making a Deadpool movie is a big commitment, from development to promotion, and it’s hard to balance with his family life. He doesn’t want to miss time with his four kids and wife, so he’s unsure about Deadpool’s future.
He also said that sometimes a movie should just stand on its own. He sees Deadpool more as a supporting character than the main focus, and while the story sometimes centers on him, it’s only possible if he’s shown as the underdog. He feels he might not be able to do that again.
It’s important sometimes to make space for a movie to just be a movie. The other thing is, I see Deadpool as a supporting much more than he is a main [character], the center. We center him sometimes because that’s what they want, but you can’t center him unless you take everything away from him. You have to create a situation where he’s so much the underdog, and I don’t think I can do that again.
So I think if he comes back, it’s going to be in someone else’s movie. Channing Tatum was so excited to play Gambit [in Deadpool & Wolverine], and I would happily be the fifth banana in his movie or anyone else’s.
I’m sure Tatum will be happy to hear this, as he’s spent the past few months pushing for his own MCU movie or a permanent spot in the new X-Men team.
