Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) is (was?) a film franchise based on Spider-Man-related Marvel Comics characters. Sony started creating the SSU in 2013, planning spin-off films from ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ including a Venom movie.

After ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ underperformed, Sony teamed up with Marvel Studios to bring Spider-Man to the MCU, while also developing a separate Venom universe.

SSU consisted of the ‘Venom’ franchise which recently released its final installment, ‘Venom: The Last Dance,’ ‘Morbius,’ ‘Madame Web,’ and the upcoming ‘Kraven the Hunter.’ Most films received poor reviews, with ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web’ being downright catastrophic.

Now as SSU gears up for the release of ‘Kraven the Hunter’ the projections for the movie’s release look awful. As you may know, box office projections are often based on pre-sale data and other key metrics.

While these forecasts aren’t always 100% accurate, they’re usually a reliable indicator. If a film is projected to earn $30 million, it’s unlikely to pull in $250 million on opening weekend; the final numbers generally stay close to the initial estimates.

Sony had high hopes for ‘Kraven the Hunter’ to follow in the footsteps of ‘Venom’ as the SSU’s next big hit. However, if the early projections hold true, ‘Kraven’ is more likely to follow the disappointing path of ‘Morbius’—or worse, ‘Madame Web’.

The film is currently projected to earn around $20–25 million during its opening weekend—a dismal figure for a large-scale action movie, particularly one with a hefty $130 million budget.

The movie will also have a limited release as it will be released in 1000 fewer theaters than ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web.’ The Wrap’s latest analysis shows that Sony has burned through an eyewatering sum trying to build Spider-Man’s universe without him in it, and now if their source is correct. ‘Kraven the Hunter’ is SSU’s last movie.

A top talent agent told The Wrap that Sony is now focusing on Spider-Man himself. We have the Spider-Verse movie in the development and Amazon’s ‘Spider-Man: Noir’ show which so far received incredible feedback based on set leaks.

They’ve developed what they want to develop for now. It’s really about the next ‘Spider-Man’ film

A second Sony insider revealed that the studio is now focusing on the upcoming Holland’s Spider-Man movie, which is supposed to start a new trilogy in the MCU.

That situation is difficult was obvious since the marketing circuit for ‘Kraven the Hunter’ began. Both Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the movie’s star, and the director J.C. Chandor practically begged fans to come and see the movie, promising that if the movie gets enough support, we might see ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’ play out.

If we come in large enough numbers, we might actually get Spider-Man in SSU. Now, if the analysis is correct, ‘Kraven the Hunter’ is dead on arrival, and so is SSU.
