Before Disney+ shows, Netflix was home to the Defenders Saga and several street-level superhero shows, including Luke Cage. The show ran for two seasons and was popular, with Mike Colter in the lead role.
However, it was canceled due to creative differences and changes in Marvel’s strategy as they moved away from Netflix. With the upcoming release of Daredevil: Born Again, the MCU might reference or continue storylines from past shows.
Fans hope some of these old shows will continue on Disney+, with Krysten Ritter expressing interest in returning as Jessica Jones. As for Luke Cage, Mike Colter recently spoke on SiriusXM’s The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw and shared some interesting thoughts.
Mike Colter mentioned that he could see himself returning to Luke Cage since enough time has passed, and he’s worked on other projects, making it feel fresh rather than repetitive. He said there could be another chapter for the character, but he’s uncertain about Disney’s direction for the show.
He also highlighted that Luke Cage and Jessica Jones included important social commentary, which made them stand out, and he’s unsure if Disney would continue that aspect.
At this point, I could see myself revisiting Luke Cage because there’s been enough time and I’ve done enough things where I feel like, ‘Okay, that doesn’t feel repetitive.’ There could be another journey, another chapter for that character, but with the Disney of it all, what their direction in terms of those characters, I think Luke and Jessica had some social commentary and I don’t know if they’re up for that ’cause that’s what made us, our series, unique.
The actor explained that Luke Cage was more than just fighting random villains—it included deeper themes. He said he’d be open to returning if Disney decided to revisit those themes. While he feels the timing is right now, he wasn’t sure a few years ago. Colter emphasized that he needs to think about how he feels about the project and whether the story inspires him before making a decision.
There’s a little bit of social commentary there. We’re not just, you know, fighting random people for the sake of whatever. There was a community. There was a demographic that was touched by our stories, so if they would revisit that, I think I would be up for it. You know, the timing’s right now. You know what I mean?
The timing is right. Otherwise, you know, me a few years ago, I was like, ‘I don’t know.’ I was like, ‘This is interesting,’ so I’m that kind of person. I just need to figure out where I am, you know, how I feel about it. I’m inspired by whatever they’re presenting to me.
Colter mentioned a few months ago that he doesn’t often think about the role, but he would consider returning if the script and story are good.
