An ambitious project, Yellowstone is set to end in just a few days with the highly-anticipated Season 5 finale, which is also going to serve as the series finale. The series started off great, but you probably know that the production of the recent seasons was burdened by several controversies.
While you might have thought that this would kill the franchise as a whole, it has officially been confirmed that the Yellowstone franchise won’t be ending on December 15, 2024, when the fifth season’s final episode is going to air. This means that more Yellowstone content will be released in the future.
While you might have thought that a sixth season is on the way, we can confirm that it is not a continuation of the main series but rather a spin-off series that will be focused on two of the series’ best and most popular characters. Who? Keep reading to find out!
Per Deadline, the Yellowstone universe is expanding, but not with a direct continuation of the show we know. Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who play Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, have signed on to lead a new Yellowstone spinoff.
The series will follow their characters, along with others from the original show, and will take place in the same time frame. This spinoff will be the first to keep Yellowstone in the title, making it the closest to the main show in terms of tone and story.
While we’re gearing up for the Season 5 finale of Yellowstone, there’s been growing confusion about what’s next for the remaining characters.
With Kevin Costner’s John Dutton no longer part of the picture, there’s been talk of a Season 6 focusing on Beth and Rip. However, it seems the focus is now on this new series, which could feature other familiar faces.
Negotiations with Reilly and Hauser started months ago, with both actors initially thought to lead a continuation of Yellowstone Season 6. But as it turns out, the idea of a new show featuring these two leads took priority.
This change also makes sense from a business perspective, allowing Paramount Network to keep the Dutton story in-house, especially since the original Yellowstone is tied to an exclusive streaming deal with Peacock.
In the final episodes of Yellowstone, the death of John Dutton has set the stage for a battle over the ranch’s future. Beth and Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, are at the heart of the family’s efforts to protect their legacy, with hints that Kayce may have a plan in the works.
This new spinoff will be part of a growing list of projects in the Yellowstone universe, including the prequels 1883 and 1923. The next spinoff, The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, will follow after the current season.
