Red Sonja has become an iconic character in comic book and fantasy culture. She is known for her strength, independence, and warrior spirit, often serving as a symbol of empowerment, especially for female characters in action genres.
Over the years, Red Sonja has appeared in numerous comic series, movies, and TV shows, gaining a loyal fanbase and inspiring other strong female characters in comics and popular media.
Two years ago, it was announced that Red Sonja is getting one more live-action adaptation, and now after a long time of almost no news regarding the state of the movie, some action footage has leaked online as well as some set images. You can check them out below:
Lutz’s armor in the footage closely matches later comic book versions of Red Sonja, and she also has Sonja’s iconic face paint. The skimpy chain-mail bikini from earlier depictions is not included. (Sorry.)
The development of the second ‘Red Sonja’ film has faced several changes over the years. It started in 2008 with Robert Rodriguez’s project, which was eventually scrapped, and was later revived with various directors and producers attached, including Simon West, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway.
After many delays and changes, the film began production in 2022 with Matilda Lutz cast as Red Sonja, and M. J. Bassett as the new director, with filming taking place in Bulgaria and Greece.
Lutz mentioned that the movie will have a different tone from the comics and tell a new story. The cast of ‘Red Sonja’ includes Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, and Eliza Matengu in key roles.
Veronica Ferres plays Ashera, the mother of Red Sonja, while Katrina Durden, Manal El-Feitury, Rhona Mitra, Kate Nichols, and Danica Davis are also part of the cast in undisclosed roles.
