The new prequel manga for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, titled MADNESS, began serialization today. This manga features Rebecca and Pilar, two beloved characters from the original anime, as the main protagonists. Written by Bartosz Sztybor, who worked on the anime’s screenplay, the story dives deeper into their past and adventures in Night City.

In this new series, Rebecca and Pilar are siblings who share a common goal of becoming legendary edgerunners, much like their father. Night City, the sprawling metropolis full of corruption, dangerous tech, and shady dealings, is the perfect backdrop for their chaotic journey.

As they struggle to survive and prove themselves, they cause mayhem and face serious challenges. Along the way, they cross paths with a mysterious man named Safran, whose appearance dramatically changes the course of their lives.

The art for MADNESS comes from Asano, who previously worked on the manga adaptation of BNA. His illustrations will bring the high-octane, cyberpunk world to life in a whole new way. The manga is being published by KADOKAWA on their online platform, Comic Alive +, starting December 13th.

The first chapter is available in Japanese, and multiple translations will follow, including Polish, Italian, German, French, Spanish, and traditional Chinese. The English version will be published by Dark Horse Comics in paperback format.

Fans of the anime will recognize Rebecca’s fiery, bold personality, which made her a standout character in the show. Together with Pilar, she embarks on a wild adventure to make their mark in the dangerous underworld of Night City. But things take a turn when Safran enters the picture, steering their fates toward unexpected directions. The official synopsis reveals the following details:

Rebecca, whose fiery personality made her a fan-favorite, grows up with her big brother Pilar as they pursue their shared dream of “becoming a legendary edgerunner like their father”. In the megalopolis of Night City, where obsessions with technology, body modification, and power run rampant, they struggle, suffer, and cause chaos wherever they go!

As they go about their daily lives, the mysterious Safran appears before them — changing the trajectory of their future. In this manga, a prequel to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, siblings Rebecca and Pilar’s lives are full of madness as they rush through Night City to prove themselves as edgerunners.

This manga serves as a prequel, expanding on the story and world of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. For those who remember the anime, it’s an exciting chance to explore more of Rebecca and Pilar’s backstory. The series also promises plenty of action, drama, and the chaos that defines the anime’s tone.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners first debuted on Netflix in September 2022, quickly winning hearts and even earning recognition as the Best New Anime of the Year. Its success has led to the creation of another animated project, which is currently in production in collaboration with Netflix Animation, CDPR, and the Cyberpunk team, so expect some updates in that department as well, as the future is looking good for the franchise.

If you’re a fan of the Cyberpunk universe or the anime, the MADNESS manga is definitely something you’ll want to check out. It’s a fresh take on beloved characters, with a deeper dive into the wild world of Night City and the unforgettable journey of two edgerunners chasing their dreams.
