At the moment, Wicked is one of the biggest success stories of the year. Fans worldwide are enjoying the film and are eagerly awaiting the sequel, which is scheduled for release around the same time next year. This musical, which is based on the well-known musical of the same name as well as the acclaimed but controversial book, became an even bigger hit than the media had anticipated.
Although Wicked has had its share of controversy, it has been rather mild in comparison to some previous films, and nobody is particularly worried about the film’s future, seeing how the movie appears to be doing extremely well right now.
But, while this is not a problem in any case, we have recently reported how a lot of cast members from Wicked are members of the LGBTQ+ community, and that – of course – angered a lot of homophobes and bigots who have a problem with that, which is sad.
But, singer and actress Kristin Chenoweth, who was part of both the musical and the film, went online to defend the movie from homophobic attacks, which is great!
As per The Hollywood Reporter, Kristin Chenoweth has responded to One Million Moms after the conservative group started a boycott of the Wicked movie. The group’s petition urges parents to avoid seeing the film, accusing it of promoting an LGBTQ+ agenda, particularly for children.
One Million Moms claims the movie goes beyond its witchcraft theme, which many parents already avoid, by including cross-dressing and romantic relationships between men. The petition argues that the film is pushing a “woke” message instead of focusing on the positive themes of friendship and family that the original musical offered.
Chenoweth, who played Glinda in the Broadway musical back in 2003, took to Instagram to reply:
Everyone knows the ‘one million Moms’ are a mere few hundred. Maybe. it’s called entertainment. Artistry. I am a Christian woman or originated the role of Glinda and all the silliness that these women spew out of hate. No no no. I can’t help it : i try to love em anyways. For they don’t get it. For anyone who wants to see girl power, then go so WICKED. Onstage or in a movie theater.

The movie, which stars Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, has been a box-office success since its release on November 22. It broke records, achieving the highest opening for a Broadway adaptation. The film tells the untold story of the witches of Oz and explores their complex bond.
In an interview with Gay Times, Grande and Erivo also addressed fans who have been “shipping” their characters. Erivo spoke about their relationship, describing it as deep and filled with love:
I think Elphie is… She’s goes wherever the wind goes. I think she loves Glinda, I think she loves love. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with celebrating the deep connection the both of them have. They do have a real relationship. It is true love, which is probably why people are shipping it. What they build with each other is an unbreakable bond and love.

While the controversy over the film’s themes continues, Chenoweth’s comments show her support for the message of the musical and movie, encouraging viewers to embrace the love and empowerment it promotes.
