Liverpool FC fans have something exciting to look forward to as a new drama series is in the works, focusing on the legendary manager Bill Shankly. The show, developed by A24 and Drive to Survive producers Box To Box, will tell the story of Shankly’s role in transforming Liverpool into one of the most iconic football clubs in the world.
Jack Thorne, known for His Dark Materials and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, will write the series. It will explore the 1960s and early ’70s, a period when Liverpool FC rose from struggles to dominance, all under Shankly’s leadership. The series aims to highlight both the club’s success and the cultural backdrop of Liverpool, a city booming with music and industry during that time.
Bill Shankly, affectionately known as “Shanks,” became Liverpool’s manager in December 1959. Under his guidance, the club climbed from the Second Division and went on to win three First Division titles, two FA Cups, four Charity Shields, and the UEFA Cup.
He also helped establish You’ll Never Walk Alone as Liverpool’s anthem, a symbol that still unites the club’s supporters today. Shankly stepped down in 1974 after securing the FA Cup that year and passed away seven years later at the age of 68.
The project has a personal touch with Shankly’s granddaughter, Karen Gill, involved. Gill, who authored The Real Bill Shankly, shared her excitement about the show. “It’s a wonderful way to share my grandad’s story. Anyone who knows Liverpool FC understands what the club meant to Bill Shankly. This series will be a must-watch for all Liverpool supporters, and I’m honored to help showcase his legacy to the wider world.”
Thorne echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of Liverpool as both a club and a city. “Bill Shankly made it clear that the club and city belong to each other. This series gives us a chance to celebrate a magnificent team and an incredible city while being honest about the struggles of the industrial heartlands during the ’60s and ’70s. We want to honor the fans, the city, and the story of Liverpool FC.”
The show will be filmed in Liverpool, including Anfield, the club’s legendary home ground. For Liverpool supporters, this series will be more than just entertainment—it’s a tribute to the man who helped shape the club into a global powerhouse.
