Alec Baldwin recently opened up about the lasting impact of the 2021 tragedy on the set of Rust during an appearance on David Duchovny’s podcast Fail Better. Baldwin called the incident a life-altering event that left him determined to uncover and share the full truth. While the case against him was dismissed in July, he believes there’s still more to reveal.
The tragedy happened on October 21, 2021, when Baldwin fired a prop gun containing a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin has insisted he didn’t pull the trigger, a claim that has fueled ongoing debate.
The film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for evidence tampering and involuntary manslaughter. Baldwin initially faced manslaughter charges, which were dropped and later refiled, only to be dismissed again in July.
On the podcast, Baldwin criticized the media, accusing it of spreading stories that harmed his reputation while ignoring evidence that could have cleared his name. He expressed disappointment that the case never went to trial, saying it could have revealed crucial facts. “The truth has never been told,” Baldwin said, claiming there is significant evidence that hasn’t been made public.
Looking back on the past three years, Baldwin said he felt heavily judged and described the experience as draining. Still, he shared some hope for the future, mentioning recent discussions about returning to work. “I’ve got seven kids,” he said, stressing the need to move forward for his family.
Baldwin hinted that future legal filings could bring more details to light. For now, he plans to step back and take a break from the spotlight. “I just want to take a nap,” he admitted, signaling his need for rest after years of intense scrutiny.
The Rust shooting remains a deeply challenging chapter in Baldwin’s life. He is focused on rebuilding his career and continuing to seek answers about what really happened on set.
