Mike Flanagan, fresh off a successful run at the Toronto Film Festival with ‘The Life of Chuck,’ is not slowing down. According to Deadline, he’s teaming up again with Stephen King to transform the iconic novel ‘Carrie’ into an 8-episode series for Amazon.
This project marks another significant collaboration between the seasoned director and the celebrated author.
‘Carrie’ was King’s breakout novel back in 1974, capturing the struggles of a sheltered young girl with destructive powers triggered by her oppressive upbringing and high school bullying.
The book’s first adaptation came two years later, a film directed by Brian De Palma and starring Sissy Spacek. It set the standard for numerous adaptations that followed, including a 2002 TV movie and a 2013 film featuring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore.
This new series isn’t the only King adaptation extending beyond the typical movie format. A24 has embarked on turning ‘Fairy Tale’ into a series, directed by Paul Greegrass and JH Wyman.
Similarly, adaptations like ‘Salem’s Lot,’ directed by Gary Dauberman, and other King works are finding new life on screen, proving that some stories demand more time to be fully told.
Flanagan and Trevor Macy will serve as executive producers for the ‘Carrie’ series, while King himself is involved in several ongoing adaptations of his works. Noteworthy projects include ‘The Long Walk’ at Lionsgate and new adaptations of ‘The Institute’ and ‘The Running Man,’ the latter starring Glen Powell in a role once held by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
As preparations for the ‘Carrie’ series ramp up, a writer’s room is already being assembled, signaling that production is moving ahead swiftly. Mike Flanagan, represented by WME, and Stephen King, managed by Rand Holston Management and Gang Tyre, continue to shape how we experience horror and suspense, one story at a time.
