‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Star Ryan Reynolds Honored with Order of Canada: “Canada, you’ve given me more than I could ever give back”

Ryan Reynolds, the fan-favorite actor from Vancouver best known as Deadpool, has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian award. This honor recognizes both his Hollywood achievements and his outstanding efforts to support Canadian communities through charity and advocacy.

Reynolds won fans worldwide with his 2016 performance as Wade Wilson in Marvel’s Deadpool (though some might say he got his big break with Green Lantern in 2011). Off-screen, he’s just as admired for his charitable work.

The Order of Canada citation highlights his contributions to charities like Water First Education, Covenant House Vancouver, and the SickKids Foundation. Alongside his wife, Blake Lively, Reynolds also started the Group Effort Initiative, which helps create opportunities for underrepresented groups in the entertainment industry.

Reynolds has spoken often about his strong connection to Canada and how its values have shaped him. Earlier this year, he called receiving such national recognition both surreal and humbling.

His generosity extends beyond Canada. In recent years, he’s made significant donations to global causes, including $1 million in matching funds for Ukraine relief efforts and $500,000 to address the Indigenous water crisis. Most recently, he and Lively pledged to match up to $500,000 for the SickKids Foundation.

The Order of Canada is given to individuals who make lasting and exceptional contributions to society. Governor General Mary Simon, who oversees the awards, noted that recipients inspire others and expand possibilities. Reynolds was one of 88 honorees this year, joining notable Canadians from various fields.

While Reynolds is best known for his role as the wise-cracking Merc with a Mouth, his real-life actions show his deeper impact.

After the announcement, Reynolds took to X to share his gratitude: “Canada, you’ve given me more than I could ever repay. Thank you for this incredible honor—I promise to use my powers for good… and general whimsy.”
