The MCU has a lot of projects coming out in the next two years. Fans are especially excited about the two upcoming Avengers movies: Doomsday and Secret Wars.

Not much is known about these films yet, except that Robert Downey Jr. will be back, but he won’t be playing Iron Man. Instead, he’ll take on the role of the villain, Doctor Doom.

At this year’s SDCC, it was confirmed that the Russo brothers will direct the movie. In the past few weeks, they have shared some details about the upcoming film. We know that the movies won’t be shot back-to-back, and that the story for Secret Wars will be closely based on the original comic.

Joe Russo mentioned that he wouldn’t come back to the MCU without a very good reason. He said that Avengers: Doomsday, which will be released on May 1, 2026, aims to be as groundbreaking for the superhero genre as Infinity War and Endgame.

We’re all very close. We had been working on another project before Marvel approached all of us – so we’re working on another project with Robert – and there was a story that evolved through conversations that we got very excited about. Because it’s always got to be the story.

Although details are still a secret, it seems the multiverse will be important for Downey Jr.’s return. Joe Russo promises that Avengers: Doomsday will bring something “really explosive” when it comes to theaters.

Why would we come back if we didn’t feel like we had a story that had that possibility of being on an equal footing with Infinity War and Endgame unless there’s a kernel there for an idea that’s really explosive?

It will be tough to beat Infinity War and Endgame, but we’re sure the Russos will try with some clever surprises. So far, rumors suggest that Secret Wars might serve as a soft reboot of the MCU, which gives the movies a sense of finality like we saw in Infinity War.
