Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl has quickly become a standout in 2024’s gaming lineup. While it didn’t achieve the player counts of titles like Black Myth: Wukong or Infinity Nikki, its success is remarkable, especially considering it was developed amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The game’s release is seen as nothing short of a miracle.

In an interview with Forbes Ukraine, Maksym Krippa, owner of GSC Game World, shared the immense challenges faced during the game’s production. “The team worked nearly around the clock before release,” Krippa explained.

This project was more than just a game—it was a symbol of hope and pride for Ukraine, proof that we can create world-class projects even in the toughest circumstances.” Despite some minor bugs, the November 20th launch date was non-negotiable to avoid team burnout.

The dedication paid off. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 sold over one million copies on its first day and reached more than 120,000 concurrent players on Steam. According to Krippa, these numbers have already made the project profitable.

He hinted at even greater success ahead, saying, “With DLC and other platform releases planned, we’re confident in surpassing even the wildest predictions.”

Looking to the future, GSC Game World has big plans for Stalker 2. Two DLC expansions and a multiplayer mode are in the works, with hopes of building on the game’s growing popularity.

When asked about the potential for breaking $1 billion in sales, Krippa remained optimistic but cautious. “The total number of copies we’ll sell is unpredictable, and I don’t want to jinx it by guessing,” he said.

Beyond gaming, there’s talk of expanding S.T.A.L.K.E.R. into other mediums. Krippa revealed that discussions with Netflix about a TV adaptation are underway. While no agreements have been finalized, he expressed enthusiasm for the idea, comparing the potential series to The Witcher. “The Witcher is a source of pride for Poland, spanning books, games, and a Netflix series. Stalker has the same potential for Ukraine,” he shared.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s success follows in the footsteps of other game-inspired shows like The Last of Us and Arcane. Given the franchise’s rich lore and detailed storytelling, a well-crafted adaptation could resonate with audiences and build on the game’s achievements.

Although negotiations with Netflix are ongoing, the idea of bringing the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe to the small screen is an exciting prospect for fans and creators alike.

For now, GSC Game World is celebrating the game’s remarkable reception, proving that determination and passion can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
