Ridley Scott, the acclaimed director behind classics such as ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Gladiator,’ has revealed he’s developing a new film for the ‘Alien‘ franchise.
At 86, Scott continues to influence the cinematic landscape with his sharp, succinct approach to selecting projects.
He advises filmmakers to pitch their ideas concisely: ‘Narrow it down to something very simple and brief — tell me the film in two sentences,’ he insists, emphasizing that the core of a movie pitch should ignite an immediate spark.
This summer, Scott’s production company, Scott Free, saw significant success with ‘Alien: Romulus,’ a surprise hit that grossed $350 million worldwide.
This success has reignited interest in legacy titles under Scott’s banner, leading to new projects like FX’s ‘Alien: Earth’ and Amazon’s ‘Blade Runner: 2099’ series.
Despite his busy schedule, Scott maintains a laid-back attitude about the evolving platforms for storytelling.
He values keeping his creative visions alive, regardless of the medium. ‘I’ve created the pace visually for a while,’ Scott remarks, showing no preference for film over television, as long as the project maintains its integrity.
Scott Free, which has been independent since ending its last studio partnership in 2009, recently renewed its first-look deal with 20th Century.
The deal highlights the company’s commitment to putting creative projects first, akin to prioritizing a child’s best interests.
In a stark revelation, Scott expressed frustration over not holding ownership stakes in the ‘Alien’ and ‘Blade Runner’ franchises, a situation he attributes to past managerial oversights. Nonetheless, he is determined to keep Scott Free involved in these iconic series.
The director is also looking forward to his next big project, a biopic about the Bee Gees, set to begin shooting next year with Paramount. Meanwhile, his highly anticipated ‘Gladiator II’ is set to premiere on November 22, promising to be, in his words, ‘the best thing I’ve ever made.’
Scott’s philosophy in filmmaking and production is straightforward: ‘All of this is putting money on black.’ He relies on intuition and research but acknowledges the unpredictable nature of the industry.
