Interesting Theory Connects 'Star Wars' and 'Indiana Jones,' and You Might Just Love It

Going back to the 1980s, among the best franchises that this epic decade has left us are Star Wars (yes, we know, technically from the 70s, but the franchise’s peak was during the 80s) and Indiana Jones, which premiered in 1981. While seemingly different, these two franchises managed to capture the hearts of fans around the world and are still popular.

While Harrison Ford is the one major thing that connects these two franchises, the friendship between George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, the people behind these franchises, is also something that is worth noting, and it might just be that there is more to the franchises because of that.

Namely, we know that Lucas was the one who pitched the idea to Spielberg, which means that there is a lot of background behind the two franchises. In light of that, we have stumbled upon a very interesting theory that claims that the franchises might actually be connected and that Indiana Jones is set in the same universe as Star Wars, but in present times!

As stated, there is a deep, interconnected history between these two franchises, but that is not all. You know how there is a Yoda mask in E.T., and how the Senate of the Republic featured aliens that look like E.T.?

Well, these interesting references are something that people adored about these two works, and believe it or not, there are numerous such details in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchise, more than just one. Here is a list of the known ones (seen in various media, not just the movies):

  1.  In Raiders of the Lost Ark, there is a hieroglyph depiction of R2-D2 and C-3PO when Indiana Jones finds the Ark of the Covenant;
  2. A non-canon story from Star Wars Tales #19, titled “Into the Great Unknown” and authored by W. Haden Blackman and Sean Murphy, reveals that Han Solo, after accidentally traveling at lightspeed to Earth, is killed by Native Americans and his body is discovered hundreds of years later by Indiana Jones.
  3. The crystal skull the Russians are looking for in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was an actual skull of an alien who came to Earth in ancient times, and the humans that worshiped them built a temple around their spaceship. This was referenced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 3, episode 22 “Wookiee Hunt,” where the crystal skull can be seen among the many slain creatures in the Trandoshan hunters’ trophy room.
  4. The aliens in Indiana Jones are not called “space beings,” but rather “interdimensional beings,” as Harold Oxley explains that they had not gone to space, but rather“the space between spaces,” although this is not elaborated on. At the same time, Star Wars Rebels season 4 introduced a realm that Ahsoka Tano dubbed the “World Between Worlds,” which connected important moments through the Force; it was an interdimensional portal that contained several “worlds” one could travel through while there.

As you can see, these are some interesting connections. And while the first one is definitely just a cute reference, and the second one is not canon, the third and fourth ones could – potentially – be more serious, especially the fourth one. If we consider this to be true, then the universe of Indiana Jones is a distant future of the world of Star Wars. This is how the author concludes his theory:

This theory hinges on the World Between World’s ability to connect two galaxies, even one as “far, far away” as the Milky Way. However, given that Ahsoka season 1 confirmed that the Force exists in other galaxies, it stands to reason that the World Between Worlds can access any time and place.

Combined with the more credible Indiana Jones easter eggs, like the crystal skull appearing in The Clone Wars, it seems plausible that these interdimensional beings could travel to Earth from the Star Wars galaxy.
