If we’re putting Alfred Hitchcock, who was a genius in every aspect and one of the best and most important filmmakers of all time, aside, the first major horror director who influenced the genre in a major way was the legendary George A. Romero, whose 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead is still considered to be a classic of cinema in general.

This low-budget indie horror became exceptionally influential, with many later horror directors, such as John Carpenter or Wes Craven, being influenced by Romero and his work. And while the legendary director passed away in 2017 after battling cancer, it seems that he is coming back from the grave – which is most fitting, seeing how his specialty was zombie films – to give us one last movie.

His final script for a movie titled Twilight of the Dead, which would conclude his zombie series started back in 1968, was left unfinished at the time of his death but was finished in the meantime, and it seems that we might just see the movie after all!

As Deadline reports, “the George A. Romero estate is teaming up with L.A.-based financier-producer Roundtable on the ‘seventh and final installment’ of the seminal Living Dead franchise.” The script, as we’ve said, was started by Romero but was left unfinished due to his death. Later, under the supervision of Suzanne Romero, co-writer Paolo Zelati managed to finish the script and it was announced that the film would be made.

The SAG-AFTRA strike caused a problem and the project was delayed, but Deadline is now confirming that the project is moving forward and that it will start shooting next year in March. As revealed by the magazine, the movie will be set on a tropical island and will “delve into the dark nature of humanity from the perspective of the last humans on Earth who are caught between factions of the undead.”

Brad Anderson (Session 9, The Machinist) is set to direct the movie, and the filmmaker commented on the project as follows:

“I see this film in the same way as successful post-apocalyptic thrillers such as I Am Legend, A Quiet PlaceThe Road and The Last of Us — genre stories that are as emotional as they are intense. When I first read Twilight of The Dead, I teared up at the end. Which is weird for a film of this type. But it has that kind of pull, that combo of horror and heartbreak that I love.”

As for the main roles, it seems this will be a female-led movie, as Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) and Betty Gabriel (Get Out) have been cast in the main roles.

Twilight of the Dead will be produced by John Baldecchi and Donnelly for Roundtable Entertainment with executive producers Dominic Ianno, Alex Dundas, Jason Resnick, Stephanie Caleb, and Fortitude’s Nadine De Barros. The film will be produced alongside Desrocher-Romero, Bob Yari, Paolo Zelati, and co-financier Caliwood Pictures’ R. Wesley Sierk and Jina Panebianco.

The final script was written by Joe Knetter, Zelati, and Robert Lucas, and it was based on a story by Romero and Zelati. Stephanie Holbrook is handling the casting.

No release window has been revealed.
