Hollywood’s relationship with superhero movies has been complex, and Tom Hanks has recently shared his perspective on the genre’s evolution and challenges.
Despite the success of many superhero films, the industry has faced criticism and some recent setbacks. Marvel Studios has seen some of its films receive poor reviews, while DC’s universe appears to be waning.
Even Sony has had its share of issues despite the occasional hit like ‘Venom,’ which initially succeeded by offering a fresh take as a madcap buddy comedy.
In a recent discussion, Hanks pointed out that the technical ability to bring comic book actions to life has reached new heights, allowing filmmakers to recreate almost anything imaginable.
He reminisced about past adaptations like the 1970s and 80s TV shows for superheroes, which could not fully capture the essence due to technical limitations.
Unlike those times, today’s technology can fulfill the comic book promise, citing Christopher Reeve’s Superman as an early example of what’s now possible.
Hanks believes that while the visuals have become increasingly sophisticated, the audience’s expectations for storytelling have grown.
He used a vivid analogy, saying, ‘You can drain Lake Michigan and fill it with cuckoo clocks and create a three-headed dragon that breathes fire over Chicago. You can do that, but what’s the purpose at the end of the day? What’s the story? What does it say about us?‘
He suggests that while the spectacle of superhero movies can be compelling, it is the story and its relevance that now demand more attention.
The focus has shifted from just experiencing the power fantasies of comic book heroes to exploring deeper, more meaningful narratives.
When asked if he had any discussions with Marvel’s Kevin Feige or James Gunn from DC, Hanks clarified that he has not met with them.
He expressed that his current schedule is filled with his own projects and ideas, implying that jumping into superhero films isn’t in his immediate plans.

The industry continues to evolve, and as Marvel and DC explore new territories with projects like ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ and ‘Agatha All Along,’ they strive to meet the audience’s increasing desire for substance along with spectacle.
Hanks’ comments reflect a broader industry challenge: to elevate storytelling to match the impressive visual capabilities now at filmmakers’ disposal.
