‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is one of the most anticipated MCU projects. It marks Sam Wilson’s first solo outing as Captain America, facing off against Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus Ross as Red Hulk.

However, the film has faced challenges, including reshoots, plot leaks, and mixed reactions from test screenings. Reports suggest test audiences found the political message dull, the action underwhelming, and the romantic chemistry lacking.

Reshoots over the summer reportedly added $100M to the budget, aiming to address these issues. Some sources claim the reshoots also included nods to the ‘World War Hulk’ storyline.

Now in his latest Empire feature, Anthony Mackie the star of the movie decided to address the reshoots. Well, if you ask him, the movie wasn’t retooled at all. Anthony Mackie wanted to clarify that the movie was not drastically changed or “retooled” during production.

He explained that reshoots are a normal part of Marvel’s filmmaking process. After the main story is put together, they often go back to add or refine a few scenes to enhance the film, but the core story remains the same.

It wasn’t retooled at all, every Marvel movie I’ve done has done reshoots. It’s not retooling or remaking. You basically get the movie and the story you want, you edit it together, then go back and shoot a few more scenes.

A test screening for the movie was held a couple of months ago, and it’s rumored that the studio added the character Amadeus Cho, played by Logan Kim. Around this time, the full plot reportedly leaked online, sparking another round of negative reactions.

Two different versions of the movie were shown during the screening, and plot details from one version leaked. A viewer who attended shared that they weren’t impressed, and others who saw the movie described it as “inessential” and “flat.”

The screenings had attendees split into two groups with different-colored bracelets for separate theaters. While these reports aren’t officially confirmed—studios rarely acknowledge problems so close to release—we’ll find out for sure when the movie debuts globally on February 14, 2025.
