Lucasfilm has struck a deal with Simon Kinberg to develop a new trilogy of Star Wars movies, with Kinberg set to write and produce the films alongside Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.

According to Deadline, these films could potentially continue the iconic Skywalker Saga as Episodes 10-12. This saga began with George Lucas’s original Star Wars in 1977—a groundbreaking movie that, along with Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, forever redefined the blockbuster film genre.

Sources indicate that rather than continuing the Skywalker Saga, Kinberg’s trilogy will introduce a new storyline, joining an expanding lineup of Star Wars projects in development by James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover. Lucasfilm and Disney have yet to release any official statements.

Kinberg is no stranger to Lucasfilm, having co-created the Emmy-nominated animated series Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck, which aired from 2014 to 2018. He also served as an advisor on Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, the 2015 revival of the franchise under JJ Abrams.

Beyond Star Wars, Kinberg has made his mark in other major franchises, contributing as a writer and producer on the X-Men films and the Logan spinoff directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman. He produced the first two Deadpool movies and executive produced Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).

However, an industry insider known for her strong opinions on Kinberg’s X-Men projects was quick to voice dissatisfaction with his new role.

He also produced The Martian (directed by Ridley Scott), wrote Mr. & Mrs. Smith, co-wrote the beginning of the Sherlock Holmes series with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and launched Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie adaptations, starting with Murder on the Orient Express. In short, Kinberg is no stranger to handling major franchises.
