Hiro Murai is stepping into the world of feature films with his debut project ‘Bushido,’ an original samurai movie backed by A24.
The film is set against the dramatic and historical backdrop of feudal Japan, promising to deliver action-packed storytelling. Plot specifics are currently kept secret, but expectations are high for this cinematic venture.
According to Deadline, ‘Bushido’ is penned by Henry Dunham, known for ‘The Standoff at Sparrow Creek.’
The film will see a collaboration of producers including Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen from Square Peg, Julia Oh, Christine D’Souza Gelb, and David Hinojosa from the production trio 2AM.
This announcement comes when samurai tales are increasingly popular, as seen in the massive success of FX’s Shōgun, a series that explores similar themes and recently bagged an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.
Murai’s direction is highly anticipated, given his illustrious career in directing television and music videos, including the critically acclaimed ‘Atlanta’ and the Grammy-winning music video ‘This Is America’ by Childish Gambino.
His recent works include the Amazon music film ‘Guava Island’ featuring Rihanna and the Prime Video series ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ with Donald Glover.
On the production front, A24 continues its creative partnerships, contributing to various projects such as ‘Death of a Unicorne’ starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, and ‘The Drama’ with Zendaya and Robert Pattinson.
Additionally, A24 is set to release ‘Babygirl,’ a thriller starring Nicole Kidman, this Christmas, following the success of ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies.’
Henry Dunham, alongside his scripting duties, brings his experience from directing the thriller ‘The Standoff at Sparrow Creek,’ which garnered critical acclaim at TIFF.
The involvement of both Murai and Dunham in ‘Bushido’ signals an exciting new chapter in the samurai genre, blending traditional themes with modern cinematic techniques.
