Neon has scheduled December 27th for the U.S. theatrical debut of ‘2073,’ a documentary that blends genres, crafted by Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia, known for his work on ‘Amy.’ The release will be limited to select theaters across the country.

The movie stars Samantha Morton from ‘The Serpent Queen’ and Naomi Ackie of ‘Blink Twice.’ It draws inspiration from Chris Marker’s 1962 film ‘La Jetée,’ which tells the story of a time traveler determined to alter history and secure a better future for humanity.

Set in the year 2073, the film presents a dystopian future where society’s greatest fears have become reality. The sky is dominated by surveillance drones, and militarized police patrol devastated cities.

Survivors, forced underground, cling to memories of a once hopeful world. Morton’s character is tormented by visions of the past—our present—creating a narrative that links today’s pressing issues like authoritarianism, tech overreach, inequality, and climate change.

The documentary premiered at the Venice Film Festival and has been shown at notable festivals like the BFI London Film Festival and Sitges. It’s slated for future showings at the IDFA and DOCNYC festivals.

Kapadia collaborated with Tony Grisoni on the script, and they also produced the film through Lafcadia Productions.

Additional executive producers include Tom Quinn and Dan O’Meara for Neon, along with a team from Concordia Studio and representatives from Double Agent, Film4, who also co-financed the film.

In their ongoing commitment to documentaries, Neon has produced and is promoting several other projects this year, including films by Andrew McCarthy, Jazmin Jones, Raoul Peck, and a new political documentary by Billy Corben and Jen Gatien.
