Jon M. Chu is probably a name you’ve heard of, if not earlier, than recently, as he is the director of the upcoming two-part movie Wicked, which is based on the successful stage musical. The movie has attracted a lot of media attention and we have yet to see how good it is, but that is a topic for a different article.

Aside from his work on Wicked, Chu has also worked on several other major or otherwise popular projects and one of his earlier ones was the 2013 film G.I. Joe: Retaliation, his third standalone film and the first one not to be connected to the Step-Up franchise.

Retaliation was not received well by the critics, but it was considered an improvement, and it grossed $375.7 million worldwide against a budget of $130–155 million, which was a solid result for such a movie.

Now, more than ten years later, Chu was asked about his potential return to the world of G.I. Joe, and the answer is… well… find out for yourselves!

The G.I. Joe cinematic franchise is still alive, albeit it is not among the most active ones. Snake Eyes was released in 2021 to mixed-to-negative reviews, and we know now that a planned crossover with the Transformers franchise is being worked on.

So far, the crossover doesn’t have a director, but we know that it will be written by Derek Connolly.

Sure, as we’ve said, Chu is now working on Wicked, which is set to be a surprising hit according to the early comments, but after that, Chu could potentially go back to the G.I. Joe franchise and direct the upcoming Transformers crossover movie. ComicBook.com’s Chris Killian asked him about the possibility and here is the answer he gave:

G.I Joe, I’m in Wicked world right now. I mean I love the GI Joe World, Snake Eyes, all those people. Henry Golding, I loved his version of Snake Eyes. Um, you never know. You never know, but right now I still got movie two to go to and I um, my Joe is Fiyero.

As you can see, Chu hasn’t closed the door for a return, but as of the time of writing, there are no plans for him to come back.

He is committed to Wicked and maybe, once that is done, Chu might be called in by Paramount to direct the upcoming crossover, depending on how long Paramount is willing to wait to start production of the movie.
