Kevin Smith is working on a sequel to Dogma 25 years after its original release, and he expects Ben Affleck and Matt Damon to make at least cameo appearances.

During his “Dogma Confessional” at Vulture Festival, Smith shared his excitement about the project, joking about potential backlash:

Some people will say, ‘Don’t mess with it—you’ll ruin it.’ And I probably will. But I’m thrilled because I’ve found a way to make it happen.”

Smith is confident that Affleck and Damon will return as fallen angels Bartleby and Loki. He humorously added that after helping them with Good Will Hunting in 1997, they owe him.

The panel marked Dogma’s 25th anniversary, reflecting on the original film’s story about two angels trying to find a loophole to get back into heaven. The 1999 movie starred Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, and Alanis Morissette, alongside Smith and Jason Mewes as Jay and Silent Bob.

It was the fourth installment in Smith’s View Askewniverse, which includes films like Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and the Jay and Silent Bob movies.

Dogma was the fourth movie in Smith’s View Askewniverse, which includes Clerks (1994), Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Clerks II (2006), Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019), and Clerks III (2022).

Recently, Smith announced that Dogma would be returning to theaters and getting a new home release, thanks to a new deal for the film’s distribution rights. For the first time, the movie could also be made available to stream.

This new deal opens doors for sequels, TV adaptations, or other ways to expand the story. It’s exciting, and so many of the original cast are still active in the industry.

After Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault allegations surfaced in 2017, Smith said he felt “ashamed” to have worked with the producer early in his career. He pledged to donate all future earnings from his Miramax and Weinstein Co. projects to Women in Film.

Smith also revealed that Weinstein once approached him about making Dogma 2, but he turned down the offer.
