The upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake, is still in the works, and after some time, we’re starting to get some updates. Brad Caleb Kane, who took over as showrunner for the project in August 2024, recently shared a message with fans.
On December 13, which happened to be Friday the 13th, Kane posted a photo on Instagram featuring Jason Voorhees alongside Betsy Palmer, who played his mother, Pamela Voorhees, in the original 1980 film.
In his caption, Kane mentioned that while he couldn’t offer too much information, the story had been broken, scripts were being worked on, and the goal was to deliver a tense, bloody, and satisfying ride for fans. He teased more updates in the new year.
Kane’s involvement in the project comes after Bryan Fuller’s departure in May 2024. Fuller, who was initially in charge, left due to creative differences. Before leaving, he shared that his vision for the series would have been ambitious and risky, aiming to push the boundaries of the Friday the 13th universe.
Fuller’s approach would have transformed the franchise, but it required a leap of faith from viewers. After Fuller’s exit, Kane was brought on to take over the series. Kane, who has experience with prequels and horror series, was excited about working on the Friday the 13th franchise, especially after his love for the character of Jason. His previous work includes co-showrunning It: Welcome to Derry, a prequel to the popular It films.
Here is what Kane posted on Instagram:
The Crystal Lake series has been in the works since October 2022, when Peacock made a straight-to-series order. The series will be produced by A24, marking the studio’s first major project based on an established IP. However, we don’t know exactly when production will begin.
Sean S. Cunningham, director of the original Friday the 13th movie, mentioned in September 2024 that he had heard A24 was planning to shoot in Australia by the end of this year. He also said that there could be a Halloween 2025 release, but he cautioned that things could still change.
One of the biggest questions fans have is when the series will actually arrive. Peacock hasn’t given an official release date yet. Still, Crystal Lake will follow in the footsteps of Friday the 13th: The Series, a show that aired in the late 80s and early 90s. While the upcoming prequel series will take a deeper look into the Friday the 13th lore, details remain scarce. For now, we’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.
So, while the hype for Crystal Lake is building, it’s clear there’s still a lot of work to be done. We don’t know when filming will start or when the show will be available for streaming, but it looks like A24 and Kane are determined to make it worth the wait.
